Croatia vs Nigeria Review

Croatia 2-0 Nigeria

Croatia made a winning World Cup start against Nigeria, as new Stoke City signing Oghenekaro Etebo scored an own goal and a Luka Modric scored penalty decided an extremely poor Group D match in Kaliningrad.
Etebo, who's just joined now Championship side Stoke City from Portuguese club Feirense for £6.35m on Monday, turned Modric's first-half corner into his own net after a Ante Rebic and an acrobatic Mario Mandzukic had both got touches.
Modric then converted a 71st-minute penalty, which was somehow Croatia's first shot on target, following William Troost-Ekong manhandling of Mandzukic at a corner.
Nigeria offered little attacking threat, despite promising attacking outlets of Odion Ighalo, Alex Iwobi and substitute Ahmed Musa, the limited attempts Nigeria had came through Alex Iwobi when his shot was blocked by Dejan Lovren bjust before half-time, and Odion Ighalo nodded a Brian Idowu cross straight at goalkeeper Danijel Subasic.
The victory takes Croatia top of their group, following the 1-1 stalemate between Iceland and Argentina earlier in the day.
