France vs Peru Review
Australia 1-0 Peru
Teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe's first-half strike helped France to overcome - and therefore eliminate - a well disciplined and resilient Peruvian side to earn confirm their spot in the knockout round of the World Cup.
Ricardo Gareca's side, helped by their passionate support inside the Ekaterinburg Arena, came alive in the second half after falling behind in the 34th minute but their efforts didn't come to fruition and ultimately could not find the equaliser that would have delayed their exit.
Kylian Mbappe, who spent last season on loan at now Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint Germain, was the player who would punish the Peruvians when he tapped in Chelsea's Olivier Giroud's deflected shot, coming after a period of France dominance.
The introduction of Giroud into the starting eleven, and playing alongside Griezmann added a different dynamic to the French side who were dull and uninspiring in their opening game and enhanced the French.
It was Peru, however who had the upper hand after the half time break. Midfielder Pedro Aquino went closest to levelling when his stunning strike smashed off the bar.
Benfica's Andre Carrillo, who was had a loan spell at Watford last season, also tested Hugo Lloris' goal with a decent effort, while substitute Jefferson Farfan saw his effort into the side-netting.
France's defence remained resolute up until the final whistle, and although they have yet to convince fully that they are one of the favourites for title, will still be considered to have a strong chance of doing so.
