Morocco vs Iran Review
Morocco 0-1 Iran
A rather drab affair in St- Petersburg kicked off Group B, with this game the warm up match for the Iberian Derby. Neither team ultimately deserved to win, but Iran took all 3 of the points this afternoon,
Iran won their first match at a World Cup finals since 1998 as Morocco substitute Aziz Bouhaddouz scored an own goal in injury time, to break Moroccan hearts, who did deserve a draw from this match. Irans' only other victory at the World Cup was a 2-1 win over the United States at France 1998.
Substitute Bouhaddouz put the ball into his own net with a diving header, finding himself in the in the awkward position of facing his own goal the 95th minute as Morocco defended a freekick coming on from the left.
The result was harsh on Morocco , who had wasted plenty a chance in the first half and were denied late on when Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand produced a fine save from wonderkid Hakim Ziyech.
Morocco weren't the only African team to lose to a late header, in the World Cup on Friday, after Egypt lost 1-0 to Uruguay in Group A, thanks to a last-minute header from Jose Maria Gimenez.
