Peru vs Denmark Review
Peru 0-1 Denmark
Denmark began their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought victory against Peru in a drab match in Saransk.
In a fairly dull affair, that lacked any outstanding quality or audience pull, the most entertaining event was a VAR awarded penalty, that Peruvian Christian Cueva smashed over the crossbar. The South Americans were awarded a penalty-kick after onfield referee consulted with the video assistant referee but Christian Cueva, missed the kick
That miss proved crucial as the Danes hit Peru on the counter-attack in the second half with Tottenham star, and the always performing Christian Eriksen releasing a great pass to Yussuf Poulsen, who had conceded the aforementioned penalty, and he fired a low shot past keeper Pedro Gallese.
Peru were denied an immediate equaliser when Denmark and Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel produced a fantastic one-handed, demonstrating the quality possessed by father Peter, save to deny Edison Flores.
Substitute and captain Paolo Guerrero, only able to play after a 14-month drugs ban was lifted, following a Swiss tribunal, and a letter of appeal by the other national captains in his group, failed to score after a well excetued back heel whizzed just wide of the post, with Schmeichel looking on.
It means France top Group C on goals scored, winning 2-1 over Australia, followed by Denmark, with Peru behind the Danes and Australia, perhaps unfairly bottom of the group.
