Uruguay vs Saudi Arabia Review
Uruguay 1-0 Saudi Arabia
Uruguay far from best, good Saudi second half, Saudi Arabia defense not good enough
This game, to be rather frank, was not good. Uruguay played out the contest after a 23rd minute tap-in from Luis Suarez sealed the game for the South Americans, who are safely out of their group. Saudi Arabia were once again charismatic and fast in their passes, but once again formed no end product as their second World Cup game ended in misery. 0 goals scored, 6 conceded. Oh dear.
It was a rather slow start to the game when Luis Suarez popped up from a corner that should've been safely collected by Saudi stopper Al Owais in the 23rd minute was missed by the keeper altogether, granting Suarez a chance he could not miss. And he didn't. One of the best chances created by Saudi Arabia was a well worked move in the 29th minute which all started from the energetic Saudi left-back Al Shahrani, only for Hattan Bahebri to scuff the chance as one could tell from his body language that he was nowhere near poised to take the shot. It should've been an easy finish, and it should've given Saudi Arabia the goal they so desperately wanted. Uruguay were not playing at full-throttle, but with efficiency and poise that makes one admire their ability to be flexible with other tactics. Suarez and Cavani in previous games had been too wide to get into proper goal-scoring positions for strikers of their skill and ability, but the two made certain chances that should've been taken.
Other notable highlights of the game include a head-scratching Sanchez miss, a deflected Luis Suarez free-kick that left Al Owais scrambling to parry it from his post, eventually doing so with a strong hand, and any admirable Saudi tiki-taka pass that took place in Uruguay's half. Even though it had no end product, it was certainly interesting to see a team of this quality execute passes with quick authority and movement about them. But for all their heart and determination, it means Saudi Arabia's World Cup journey will end with a game in the group stage with a game against Egypt next Monday. Saudi Arabia boasted superior possession, 53% to 47%, but it was Uruguay who created more chances, 13 to Saudi Arabia's 8, as well as a clearly better conversion rate. Saudi Arabia made more passes throughout, 577 to Uruguay's 518, showing the short and quick passes they made, but once again, no end product, and from the way they've not taken their chances against other sides, I think they may only score 1-2 goals this tournament, depending whether Egypt decide to show up next Monday, as their World Cup campaign has been rather embarrassing too.
In conclusion? Through many moments of safe play and abstract boredom, Uruguay are safe in their group, as are Russia. They have nothing to complain about apart from scoring more goals and creating more chances, as they will need to do this to stand any chance against the bigger sides. For Saudi Arabia, their journey is over. But they can put in a performance next Monday against Egypt that can make their fans proud because frankly, they've got nothing to show for their efforts with 2/3 games completed in their group.
