England vs Columbia Review

England 1-1 Columbia

England win 4-3 on penalties

Harry Kane

England won a World Cup penalty shootout for the first time on a night of high drama in Moscow, overcoming Colombia to secure a quarter-final meeting with Sweden.
Manager Gareth Southgate celebrated with his staff while his players mobbed the heroes Pickford and Dier after their first win at the knockout stage of major tournament since 2006
Southgate's Three Lions looked to have emerged victorious and unharmed from an ill-disciplined match, thanks to another Harry Kane penalty. That plan was spoiled by Yerry Mina, who got his third goal in 3 games, to equalise in the 92nd minute of stoppage time and caused wild celebrations with the Columbia fans.
The extra 30 minutes were quite dull, and could not separate the sides, and inevitably  led to the dreaded, nerve-shredding finale , a penalty shootout, something that that has so often been England's undoing, with a dismal record of just one win in seven shootouts at major tournaments before this, a record spanning over 22 years.
England and us fans had our hearts in mouths, and we looked to be set for even more agony when Jordan Henderson's penalty was saved by Arsenal's David Ospina. Columbia's next penalty was taken by Mateus Uribe, who smashed it onto the crossbar, to give England the chance, and for Pickford and Dier to be England's saviours. England scored their next kick, and Pickford saved Columbia's 4th penalty. Tottenham's Eric Dier stepped up to take England's 4th, and could win it for his nation. He did his duty and duly delivered to send England through to a quarter final against Sweden
No previous world champions now stand between England and the final. The winners of their quarter-final will face either Croatia or hosts Russia for a place in the Moscow showpiece on 15 July.
