Premier League- Matchweek 4- Watford vs Tottenham
Watford manager Javi Gracia praised Troy Deeney's "special personality" as his Watford side came from behind to stun Tottenham and maintain their perfect start to the Premier League season.
Coming into the game, we knew that at least on side would lose their 100% record, but the majority of people expected Spurs to maintain their perfect start, considering Watford haven’t beaten Tottenham in the Premier League in all meetings.
Captain Deeney led his side's comeback with his second goal of the season, before Craig Cathcart's second-half header decided the derby.
Tottenham’s opener came under some calamitous circumstances, as Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure bundled into his own net.
Winning their first four league games for the first time in 30 years, it is the Hornets who join Liverpool and Chelsea on maximum points at the peak of the Premier League.
Speaking about Deeney, Gracia said; "He has a special personality. I've already seen and said many times he is very important on and off the pitch, today he showed that again but it is no surprise for me.
"It had been an amazing start. We are in a good moment and trying to enjoy it, knowing we have won four games - but it is only four games."
The first half lacked any notable chances, with England midfielder Dele Alli having the earliest opportunity for either side with a looping header that only concerned the back-pedalling Ben Foster for a moment, before Deeney headed over a Daryl Janmaat's during a quiet opening 20.
Harry Kane, looked a frustrated man for Spurs and the first shot on target came in first-half stoppage time. Deeney's long-range effort hit weakly, was collected by Michel Vorm, stand-in for injured Spurs captain Hugo Lloris.
It was the visitors who found themselves ahead soon after the break, as last seasons top scorer for Watford, Doucoure turned into his own net after Watford had failed to clear.
Deeney rallied his troops as the Hornets looked to respond and saw his cross put on to the bar by Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld, just moments before scoring the equaliser the resulting corner.
Watford continued to make the most of set pieces, and that allowed the Hornets to turn the game on its head on 76 minutes as their defender Cathcart smashed a powerful header into the top corner of the Tottenham goal to ensure Watford's best ever start to a Premier League season continues.
